Autonomous Vehicles
Preparing Stamford for the Future of Mobility
A More Sustainable Future
The Stamford Partnership is working to develop Stamford’s autonomous vehicle strategy. Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) technology is poised to change not only the way people move, but the very way we work and live. Balancing opportunity with safety and sustainability is a key consideration in our planning.
The High-level Plan
Phase 1: Foundation. Stamford’s Autonomous Vehicle (AV) approach begins with data gathering, community feedback, research, and planning. We are looking at interim solutions that will help bridge the gap between today’s unsafe, unsustainable vehicles and the first generation of public AVs. This will include things like electric shuttles, hybrid driver-autonomous vehicles, and other solutions. Stamford will also become home to a recurring Autonomous Vehicles & Mobility summit that will help to engage partners, vendors, and thought leaders in the space.
Phase 2: Optimization. In the second phase, Stamford will focus on traffic, safety and flow optimizations to best prepare for an autonomous future. The Stamford Transportation Center (Train Station) serves as the hub and artery for more than a million travelers annually. Special attention will be paid to peak-hour traffic and Stamford’s reliance on private shuttle fleets.
Phase 3: Segue. With key takeaways, infrastructure and pilots underway, the third phase focuses on developing the initial plan and strategy that will see autonomous vehicle technology achieve viability in Stamford.
